Exercise during pregnancy

Many doctors and midwives encourage women to keep fit and active during pregnancy, as there's evidence to suggest that this can result in a quicker, easier and safer birth.

Women who are fit , healthy and who, are used to taking regular exercise have an uncomplicated pregnancy. They are usually able to continue with their usual regime, although it's important to check with a doctor or midwife first. However, if you don't usually take regular exercise, then it's not a good idea to start a strenuous regime, although walking, swimming and pregnancy yoga or Pilates may be beneficial.
Before you start exercising, there are a few important considerations to bear in mind. Firstly, use common sense and avoid any extreme or particularly strenuous sports. You will be unlikely to be able to perform at the same level as you could do before you became pregnant, so don't overdo it or get too hot. Pregnant
women are more likely to become dehydrated, so it's important to sip water throughout your workout. Most importantly, you should always stop exercising and consult a doctor or midwife if you start to feel unwell, experience pain, dizziness or bleeding.
Now look for your favorite sport or activity and find out if it's safe to take part...

Jogging and running
If you have never been jogging or running before, it's not a good idea to start when you are pregnant. It's usually safe for experienced joggers to continue, but it's best to jog at a slower pace and for shorter distances so that you don't get too tired. In most cases, power walking is a better option.

Yoga
Yoga is one of the best forms of exercise to take during pregnancy. Look for a pregnancy yoga class, or inform your instructor that you are pregnant so that they can modify your routine. It's best to avoid more vigorous forms of yoga like ashtanga.

Pilates
Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise during
pregnancy, as it aids relaxation, suppleness and helps to tone the pelvic floor. Look for a pregnancy Pilates class, or let your instructor know that you are pregnant so that they can tell you which exercises to avoid.

Swimming
Swimming is the perfect form of exercise during
pregnancy – especially during the third trimester – as the water provides a feeling of weightlessness. Aim to swim at a slow pace for no more than 15 minutes. Alternatively, find out of your local pool runs aqua aerobics sessions for pregnant women.

Walking
Walking is a great form of exercise, particularly in the last few weeks of
pregnancy. Aim for a brisk 30 minute walk, two or three times a week.
